Notes – Lighting and Posing with Bambi Cantrell – Day 1/Session 5 (CreativeLive)

Notes from the CreativeLive.com workshop: Lighting and Posing with Bambi Cantrell – Day 1/Session 5 – Main focus : photo critiques

  • Setup basic pose and then play with it interacting with the model in a fun way to get the expression you want.
  • Expression over perfection.
  • Always error on the side of expression.
  • Good creative shot of dancers: manual focus on a spot then in bulb mode hold own the shutter to capture motion.
  • Bounce flash off wall to increase light source size. Try to bounce at 45 deg.
  • No white wall? Uses Gary Fong lightsphere.
  • Leave on auto white balance to get in ball park. Let’s lab people get to final color.
  • Expression, outfit and background should match lighting.
  • To have someone look down, ask them to lean forward and then look down (like peering into a pool).
  • In digital media, expose for highlights not for shadows.
  • In couples, hands on hair creates a feeling of intimacy.
  • In photoshop error on the side of photography. Keep it simple.
  • With blown out highlights, increase the contrast a great deal and go for editorial look.

My Notes postings are intended as a supplement to the workshop. If you are at all interested in this subject I highly recommend you purchase the full 3 day course from creativelive.com. There is no substitute to watching Bambi in action and at $149, it’s a great deal. The amount of information she provides is incredible.
